The tradition of commemorating Taras Shevchenko during the month of March has a long history in Lviv.

Taras Shevchenko is not only a genius poet, but a personification of Ukrainian independent soul! The square in front of the monument to Shevchenko becomes the celebrations centre for several spring days.

People are gathering there to read and to listen to the immortal poems and songs to words by Shevchenko. They speak about the importance of following Taras Shevchenko’s example of a humanist and patriot. That is a time for everyone to realize Shevchenko’s place in his own life.

“The Shevchenko Fest” contest may be considered a continuation of the Commemorative Days. Every May young authors are competing for the awards in the nominations “Songs to Shevchenko words”, “Poetry” and “Shevchenko’s Subjects in Visual Art”.

It was the airport in Lviv, of all things, that first charmed me. Regional airports across the former Soviet Union tend to be a dreary lot, with all the appeal of a 24-hour bus station. But the one in Lviv, the largest city in western Ukraine, had wood paneling and ornate columns and the feel of a grand old railway station in a 1950s film.
