LVIV – CULTURAL CAPITAL OF UKRAINE

Lviv is a multicultural and multinational city which has always served as a bridge between Ukraine and Europe. Lviv is known as the city of the lion, the cultural capital of Ukraine. Every year, more than 100 international cultural and artistic events take place in the city. Lviv is a mysterious, but charming city for Ukrainians, who are attracted by its European atmosphere, and for Europeans, who feel and see the city’s authentic national colouring.

Lviv is also a city with great tourist potential. Fifty-five percent of all the cultural monuments of Ukraine can be found in our city. The city has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List during more than ten years. 1.5 million tourists visited Lviv in 2008, the greatest number in many years. But, the city welcomes more than 40% visitors regularly. In 2009, Lviv was voted the coziest and warmest place for city-living in Ukraine.

Lviv is used to organizing large-scale events. Pope John Paul’s visit in 2001 was one of the greatest celebrations in the history of modern-day Lviv. More than 1.5 million pilgrims arrived in the city to meet with His Holiness. In 2006, Lviv celebrated its 750th anniversary with over half a million tourists taking part in the festivities.

The city has organized many special events aimed at promoting the UEFA EURO 2012™ Championship. As we are great football fans, we set up giant-screen broadcasts of five football matches involving the Ukrainian National team in special fan zones; one fan zone even gathered more than 15,000 football fans. The only museum in Ukraine dedicated to Football Trophies also opened in Lviv. In 2010, a football tournament will be organized between journalists from EU countries.

WE'RE IMPATIENTLY WAITING TO SEE ALL OF YOU IN OUR CITY!

  • The New York Times: Lviv, Ukraine: Local Dumplings and International Sensibility

It was the airport in Lviv, of all things, that first charmed me. Regional airports across the former Soviet Union tend to be a dreary lot, with all the appeal of a 24-hour bus station. But the one in Lviv, the largest city in western Ukraine, had wood paneling and ornate columns and the feel of a grand old railway station in a 1950s film.
