Briefly about the movie “Young Plato”
“Young Plato” is not just a documentary, but a deep and inspiring story that opens a new perspective on education, community and the role of philosophy in the modern world. This film shows how knowledge and education can be tools to break down stereotypes and old narratives.
Here is a summary of the tape:
The contemplative documentary follows the civil conflict in Ardoyne, an area of Belfast where the working class has suffered for generations due to poverty, drug and gun violence. The film depicts the dream of school principal Kevin McAreaway and his dedicated team working hard for the future, showing how critical thinking and a caring pastor can encourage children and give them the courage to look beyond the boundaries and limitations of their community. We see how philosophy prompts them to question the myths of war and violence—sometimes in defiance of narratives imposed by parents, peers, and a particular socioeconomic group.
After the viewing, an equally exciting discussion awaits you with experts Tatyana and Roman Lehniuk. Together they will reflect on how the experience of the Belfast school can be applied in our context. Can philosophy become the key to solving social problems? How can one person with a vision change the future of an entire community?
